I'd love to hear from you!

About:
I live in Seattle with my husband and a fluffball named Chewie. Been here for more than 5 years now.

I started up my cooking experiments once I took over most of the daily cooking from Vivek, who had been our resident chef in 2007(mid 2007 to early 2008). The problem with experimenting with dinner dishes is that, even if the dish comes out good, we might just not like it taste wise. And that puts the dinner at risk. So I thought and thought and picked up baking. Baking helps me make snacks/breakfast/tea-time things which can always be substituted with something else if the taste buds reject the final product:)

I have been blogging since 2009. I am also a health nut and constantly strive to reduce the fat and sugar required in most baked goods. I am not a by the book cook, or a stickler for measurements. Vegan Richa is my baking, cooking blog and Hypnagogic is the random life blog.

I am out of work (software Dev  and am I so happy about that!), recovering(almost fully recovered as much as I could:)) from a Craniotomy done in 2006 to remove a meningioma(brain surgery to remove a tumor). I am trying to think up some other completely different career options to pursue:).

I am a foster parent for a Dog Rescue (Gingers Death Row Rescue) and also with the Seattle Humane Society , Though I mostly end up fostering dogs from the Death Row rescue, since I cant really handle big dogs yet. I still have some balance issues and fostering and baking are helping me get back on my feet! I was fostering till mid 2010, then was hit by panic disorder brought on most likely by the follow up MRI. Everything is clear, but my brain refuses to listen :) So I am working on calming it down and getting life back on track. You can read my daily blab on Hypnagogic .

My right eye nerves were affected during the surgery so that limits my reading, writing, browsing in general, online or books. I do read a lot of blogs intermittently and some books a couple of pages at a time, but since the eyes get tired very easily, I am not so active in the world of blogging, connecting and commenting. I am slowly trying to get more out there.
Update: Food photography is working like Tai-chi for my eyes, getting better at browsing and editing pictures and such. Reading long pages is till a pain. I love reading everyone's stories and posts, and try to spread it out during the day to help me get to as many blogs as I can.

I am also trying to raise awareness about cruelty towards all living things, animals and the environment.  Check out some of my efforts, research, alternatives on Hypnagogic

We are on a plant based diet(transition started in 2010 by eliminating things one by one. All the current the recipes on the blog are now vegan. Some Recipes from the archives are non vegan, but can be veganized with simple substitutions.

I try to use whole, organic as less processed as possible ingredients. I do use some new products and substitutes to find out how they taste and work, but eventually phase them out with home made or unprocessed options. Our food philosophy keeps changing into things that make sense to me and you can notice that in the posts and recipes over the years.

Why Vegan

Me: I realized I couldnt directly or indirectly cause extreme suffering and death of any other animal or human when there are alternatives. Hubbs, found about the impact on our own health and environment because of our food choices and decided. a little bit of my compassion rubbed off too. For more reasons see my Why Vegan series on the personal blog.

What keeps this food blog going, is to prove, that any food choice, is not about giving up, it is about finding something better.

About food:
I cook very intuitively. On the blog, you will find a good number of yeast breads, Vegan-ized Indian and fusion foods, some other cuisines visited, cookies, cakes, breakfast, bakes, and more.

Thank you for stopping by. and please do let me know how you like the blogs and the recipes!

Best Wishes and love to everyone!

FAQs

Would you do a book Review?
I do review books occasionally. The book has to be vegan. If I like the book, recipes and can make most of what is in it, then yes. I am put off by excessive use of fake meat, cheese or ready/boxed ingredients, sauces and too much sugar. I also take my time for the review because my time in the kitchen varies depending on my health. Please email me for inquiries.

Would you do a product review?
Yes. I do feature products occasionally on the blog. Again, it depends on the product, its usefulness in everyday life, nutrition value, and the company values. Please email me.

Do you advertise on the blog?
I do not have any ads on the blog as of now. I am not interested in sponsored posts. I will open up 150 by 150 pixel banners on the right side bar in the near future.

Can I post your recipe on my site, blog, newsletter?
For most cases, please link up the original post instead of copying the recipe. For other feature requests, please email me for permission.

  7. Just found your blog and looking forward to trying out some recipes. If you're tired of reading, might I suggest a text-to-voice translator so you can hear blogs and other writing from the Internet. I know it's not the same but it may help.

  11. Hi Richa, Glad you are on your way to a full recovery and thank you for sharing your story. Looking forward to following your blog as I am a Vegan too and it is not easy finding yummy recipes. Wish I had the time to create my own recipes and do when I can but my business keeps me long hours. Love your other blog too especially being a huge animal lover myself. It is chock full of great information to educate the public! I am trying to complete my first self published non-fiction children's book to help raise awareness starting with children! I have many more stories to write being a care taker of a cat colony and having pets of my own. Would it be okay to share your Hypnagogic blog on my blog as well as some of your informative links? If you allow me too, not being the most savvy with my blog set up, as soon as I can get some guidance I will add the information. My blog is projectpercipaws.blogspot.com - Caring Hearts Loving Paws

  13. Dear Richa,
I'm from Germany and (sorry for my unperfect English ;-) I'm so glad to have found your blog.
I love your vegan recipes and your wonderful photos.
I would like to know if it is o.k. for you when I post your recipes translated in a german recipe database.
Of course I will declare that this are recipes from Richa, Seattle ...
Please let me know if you agree with my idea.
    Thanks a lot, Daniele

    2. Hi Daniele,
I am so glad you like the recipes. I dont think copying my recipes, even if translated is a good idea. Please dont copy them. It produces duplicate content on the web and if people already have the recipe, they will not visit the blog. There is a translate option on the right side bar on the blog as well.
What kind of database is it? is it a website? What you can probably do is put a description of the recipe and a link to the blog in the database, and maybe add your contact information for anyone who needs help in translating.
      Thanks
      Richa

    3. Dear Richa,
thanks for your quick answer. My idea was to put the recipes to www.chefkoch.de Unfortunately it is not possible only to publish links or so because of the consistent format. But I respect your wish and go on with publishing your blog to all my friends and colleagues!
Have a nice time, greetz from Germany, Daniele

    4. Thank you for understanding Danielle. This blog is my hard work and years of working on the recipes and photography. It would take the credit away from me to duplicate it on another website.
Thank you once again for liking the recipes.
      Richa
