BOO! pfft. Of course You are not scared. There is still time for Halloween! I was racking my brain to come up with Halloween ideas and really I am not that good at thinking up creepy goodies. š
I was planning to make falafels the other day and was browsing for ideas online. A good load of eyeballs and witch fingers were thrown at me by the interwebz. So came the idea of making some bloody falafel fingers.
I soaked up some chickpeas and decided to add some split yellow peas(more legumes the better!), and falafel spices. Shaped them up into fingers, made almond finger nails and dipped the falafels in Sriracha/ketchup. Baked them up. Bam! I also made a sandwich with the fingers with some freshly baked bread. Those fingers coming out of the sammie look creepy dont they ;).
And that is just Sriracha, no food coloring. Baked Beany Nutritious, no gluten or grain and awesome. The bread is a Cauliflower Loaf which will be on the blog shortly. You can use any favorite bread or this Everyday Sandwich Loaf. You can make the falafels with just chickpeas or just split peas or any bean that you have on hand. Shape them any which way if you dont like fingers. I made a bunch of regular patties too.
Last year I made these Halloween Mummy Pizzas, with home made Mozzarella and cheddar, for the Pizza Vegan Month of food theme.
These Pizzas have since then been featured on The Vegan Woman’s Halloween guide which has lots more fun options, and Dailyburn’s Spook-tacular Gluten-free Halloween Options.
Remember this gorgeous Quinoa Biryani! That was featured on Vegnews’s 7 Fall favorites yesterday! Warm spiced up quinoa for the cold weather:). This has been an awesome week with lots of love! Thank you everyone for the features.
Some more amazingly creative Halloween ideas at Cara’s ebook here. gosh those infested cupcakes.:)
Vegan Falafel Fingers!
The eastern coast of India was hit by a category 10 cyclone (equal to a category 5 hurricane) Phailin and that lead to a lot of devastation for people as well as animals. A lot of people were displaced, migratory birds lost their lives and people as well as animal sanctuaries struggling to survive and help each other. You can follow the updates on HAI facebook page here. If you wish to donate, you can donate to this fundraiser.
Steps:
Soak the chickpeas and split peas. Drain and keep ready. If your chickpeas and split peas are too hard, you can blanch them in boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes. Drain and then use.
Drain and add to food processor or blender. Add all the other ingredients.
Pulse to make a coarse well mixed mixture.
Add some chickpea flour if needed and shape into fingers or patties. Stick almond halves with some chickpea flour paste for finger nails.
Bake until golden brown. Serve hot.
Or make a creepy Sandwich. Top bread slice with greens, Falafel fingers, Sriracha, onions, tahini.
I thought of splashing a load more ketchup on the sandwich then decided against it ;). Feel free to serve and use props and dips as you like.
Bloody Falafel Fingers. Baked Chickpea Split Pea Falafels for Halloween. Vegan Glutenfree recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (82 g) dry chickpeas
- 1/2 cup (72.5 g) dry split yellow peas
- 1/3 cup (4.67 g) chopped red onion
- 4 cloves of garlic
- 1/4 cup (4 g) cilantro packed
- 1/4 cup (15 g) parsley packed
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) cumin powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) whole coriander seeds or coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) cayenne pepper/ or black pepper or to taste I also added 1/2 a Serrano chili pepper. Spice!
- 2 teaspoons oil optional
- 1-2 Tablespoons (1 Tablespoons) chickpea flour
Instructions
- Wash and Soak chickpeas and split peas for 2 hours or overnight (overnight for best results. you can also use Sprouted chickpeas). They should have a give when you press them. *If the chickpeas or split peas are too hard even after the soak (sometimes they are too old), blanch them in rapidly boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes. Drain and then use.
- Drain and add to food processor or blender. Add the rest of the ingredients except chickpea flour. Pulse to form a coarse mixture. If using a Blendtec or other blender, blend half the amount at a time. Transfer to bowl and add chickpea flour if the mixture is too mushy and doesn't easily stick together. Form patties or long fingers.
- Stick almond halves to the fingers using chickpea flour and water paste(add a few drops of water to a teaspoon of chickpea flour). I soaked raw almonds for an hour, then peeled and halved them to use.
- Bake in preheated 375 degrees F / 170Āŗc for 25 minutes or until golden brown on the outside. (Turn the tray after 15 minutes to bake evenly). Serve hot. If serving patties, serve with tahini sauce, hummus, lettuce, pickles, onions and tomatoes, as is or in a pita.
- Dip the fingers in ketchup or Sriracha and serve as is or in a Sandwich with Tahini, Onions, greens and drizzle more Sriracha.
Loving the finger sandwiches š

super tempting sandwich
Thanks for sharing this post.it such a nice Food Processor product .i am happy to buy this.
This is such a fabulous idea! And they look strangely tasty!! If I end up doing anything at mine for Halloween I’m definitely making these. Even if not, I’d like to try the chickpea/yellow split pea falafel .
They look fantastic and slightly creepy with the almond fingertips. I love how you have used split peas and chickpeas in your falafels – what a great idea!
Ha! Those look so fun!
ha! I love it Richa. Creepy + Yum is so much fun. My favorite part is the bloody sriracha. Happy Halloween!
The creepy finger sandwich is too funny! Very creative and looks tasty too š
Wow, these fingers look blooooooooooody tasty with that damn Sriracha! Happy Halloween!!!!
You scared me and I will never look at falafel quite the same. Bahahahahaha.
These look great! I have a Halloween party to attend soon and I was looking for something healthy – and scary – to bring. I’m definitely going to try these!!
i need to make these for my halloween party! how much does 1/2 c of chickpeas become once cooked?
the chickpeas arent cooked, just soaked They become like 2.5 times. the current measurement if you sub the split yellow peas with chickpeas will make maybe 1 more finger than if u used split peas.
I am going to try these for halloween party that I am going to this weekend. Just weekend if the falafel gets too dry after baking.
They do dry out a bit. Brush generously with oil and bake and store Refrigerated in a closed container. The closed container will keep the moisture in. Reheat and serve with generous sauce or dressing
Ha! These are so awesome, I think some of Cara’s Halloween madness has rubbed off on you! They are so super CREEPY!
lol…every time I hear the phrase “finger sandwiches” from now on these images will pop into my head. You’ve given afternoon teas a whole new spin. š
I’d love to make these for an office potluck luncheon. Can these be served cold? Or do you have suggestions on how could warmed up or kept warm until noon? How well do they stick together Do they fall apart when cold?

Just looking for ideas for a family halloween. I have been making witch fingers out of shortbread, with an almond nail, for years. It never occurred to me to make a savory version. I am so glad someone else did and posted the result.
THanks.
That’s great! Yes they’re very diverse and you can try experimenting with various flavours. Like rosemary or others.
