OMG you all, this Berbere Spiced Jackfruit is like pulled jackfruit on crack! Berbere crack. Make a triple, no quadruple recipe and freeze and make tacos, wraps, sandwiches or what not. Just make it.

It takes 15 Minutes to put together. Process everything in a processor to shred. Mix in the spices, spread on a sheet, bake and Done! No saute-ing needed. No extra flavoring, caramelizing or crisping steps. You can make your own Berbere Blend or get some online.

Let me tell you what is going to happen when you try this spiced jackfruit. You will remember the flavor burst from every bite, and promptly forget all other jackfruit tacos! It is so good.

You can use other spice blends like garam masala, shawarma, Jamaican jerk, but I am digging the berbere profile right now. You can also use shredded hearts of palm to sub jackfruit. Or some shredded sweet potato or butternut. The baking time will be less with sweet potato like veggies.

No Extra pans sauteing or anything required.  Just mix and spread.

This recipe turned out great. Thank you for sharing! The jackfruit was spiced perfectly and had the right amount of heat. I didn’t have a 20 oz can of jackfruit, I only had a 14 oz can so I adjusted the spices accordingly (used roughly 2/3 of the measurements). I ended up roasting some chickpeas with the other 1/3 of the spices and threw that in the tacos too. I topped it with a homemade shredded cabbage coleslaw (Vegan) and cucumbers. It was delicious! I will definitely be keeping this recipe in rotation.

You had me at 8 cloves of garlic PLUS garlic powder! This is a terrific and easy recipe. Serving it with ranch really balances out the spices.
I assumed the oil goes in with the spices and sauces when baking.

What’s the best way to reheat the jackfruit mixture from refrigerated or frozen? Had to make it in advance but I don’t want to sacrifice that lovely texture this recipe achieves!

You can probably bake the mixture 5 mins less and then reheat on the oven, bake for 5 to 10 mins to crisp.

Can I make this out of fresh jackfruit? I have 10 ounces of already prepared, ready to eat jackfruit. Thanks. I’ll rate it after I make it. Tomorrow, probably. 🙂

yes. If i had fresh jackfruit easily available i would use that instead of canned in a pinch! It might get done a few minutes early as the fresh might not have that much moisture to evaporate, so check earlier.

Does it matter if the jackfruit is canned in water vs. brine vs. syrup?

Yes, the syrup jackfruit is ripe jackfruit is very sweet and fruity to be eaten as is as a fruit. It cannot be used in savory dishes.
Jackfruit in Brine or syrup is unripe and is the one to be used in savory dishes.

This looks terrific. I like the idea of adding chickpeas. Do you add the chickpeas before or after you shred in the food processor? Do you need to increase all spices if you are adding chickpeas? thanks.

I would add a 1/2 cup chickpeas to the processor, too much and it might be hummus :). You can also just toss the chickpeas in berbere spice, some bbq, salt and garlic powder and bake on a separate sheet or pan so that the jackfruit texture is not compromised, and you can add as many or as little chickpeas to each taco when serving.

Would this cooking method work with you chipotle jackfruit tacos? In my mind, I just think baking the jackfruit would make it have more of a meat-like consistency as opposed to what I call it’s “artichoke” consistency.

It should work. Use only a 1/4 cup water to blend up the sauce ingredients and mix in with well squeezed and shredded jackfruit. Add some finely chopped onion or carrots as well and bake. Let me know if the baking time works out and the flavor and texture.

you can still put them in the oven for 10 minutes or so to crisp and dry out a bit.
